![Nathan Bergey from PSAS has kindly agreed to share some of PSAS's experience with molding fibreglass nosecones with us, so we can assess the suitability of this technique for OHKLA and also consider the possibility of having PSAS help with this part of the project. He asked if there was somewhere particular... gopost](/wp-content/plugins/simple-forum/styles/icons/default/gopost.png) |

Thanks a lot for posting this, Nathan. It was a great insight into how fibreglassing up a nose actually happens (I have no fibreglass experience at all). It seems like a lot more work than I thought, but it's good to know it's still within the realm of feasibility for a dedicated... gopost](/wp-content/plugins/simple-forum/styles/icons/default/gopost.png) |

![I was thinking today about the question of choosing materials for the oxidiser tank and combustion chamber for OHKLA today, and have decided that the approach we have just started trying, of choosing based on paramters like density and tensile strength, probably doesn't make a lot of sense. We can't... gopost](/wp-content/plugins/simple-forum/styles/icons/default/gopost.png) |

![Sorry for my absence recently. I was enjoying my summer holiday/wedding. I am back now and will gradually resume working with OHKLA. I see that there have been quite many posts too. It's nice to see things moving forward.

![This thread is supposed to give a separate, logical home to an off-topic conversation rpulkrabek and I have been having in another thread. It's about a relative major decision which needs to be made regarding the overall structural architecture of the OHKLA rocket. The sooner we make this decision... gopost](/wp-content/plugins/simple-forum/styles/icons/default/gopost.png) |

By "the design we have now" do you just mean the use of an aerostructure, or are you including all or part of the design proposed in this other thread? Sorry for the confusion, I actually originally thought that your reply was on that thread and not this one.

![Just pointing people to a handy resource for OHKLA design: here's an old NACA paper (NACA was the precursor of NASA) on the subject of fin flutter at supersonic velocities. I'd been doing some searching on fin flutter in general and this seems to be a very widely cited paper. It gives equations relevant... gopost](/wp-content/plugins/simple-forum/styles/icons/default/gopost.png) |

![This post contains a number of questions relating to the aerodynamics of OHKLA that we haven't really done any work on yet, but should definitely be thinking about at this stage. Sampo from OpenRocket has kindly agreed in an email to help us where we can on this front, so I'll be pointing him to this... gopost](/wp-content/plugins/simple-forum/styles/icons/default/gopost.png) |

![I watched that video and am definitely in agreement that the perceived fluttering is a video artifact.
The link you provided with the fin material recommendations was interesting reading, but it is focused pretty exclusively on much smaller rockets than OHKLA is likely to be, which I guess puts a bias... gopost](/wp-content/plugins/simple-forum/styles/icons/default/gopost.png) |

![I have been investigating as to how the rocket will be designed and one place I have been trying to find out more information is with the nozzle shape. There are a lot of variables that affect this. For a good start, visit here:

![Due to its light weight and high strength properties carbon fiber is an ideal material to use in aerospace applications. It is very likely that many components of the CLLARE program will use carbon fiber so it might be a good idea to gain knowledge by constructing the OHKLA rocket almost exclusively... gopost](/wp-content/plugins/simple-forum/styles/icons/default/gopost.png) |

![On a more serious note, I think that using stainless steel for the body and carbon fiber for the nosecone and fins might be a good compromise between getting something together fast and getting useful experience for CLLARE (although I do wonder how much experience in making a thin, cylindrical tube out... gopost](/wp-content/plugins/simple-forum/styles/icons/default/gopost.png) |
