Programs
This page presents a list of all current CSTART programs, and some possible future programs. You can click on each program’s name to read more about it.
CSTART programs are structured into stages. Stage 1 of each program is always the simplest achievable goal that is in line with the program’s overall aims, and each additional stage raises the bar. Each program is composed of many projects. The current stage of a program is whichever stage the most recent project has achieved. A program is over once a project which meets the requirements of the final stage is complete.
Current programs
The current set of CSTART programs focus on developing foundational technology for future, more ambitious programs. At the completion of all phases of all the foundational projects, CSTART will have developed basic rockets, satellites and manned spacecraft. These will serve as the building blocks for future programs focused on science and exploration in Earth orbit and elsewhere in the solar system.
CloudLab Program
The goal of the CloudLab program is the design and construction of a family of high altitude balloon systems with reliable payload recovery capabilities, to facilitate high altitude testing of hardware for other CSTART programs, and the conducting of science programs.
Chimera Program
The goal of the Chimera program is the design and construction of a family of safe and reliable hybrid rocket vehicles of increasingly capability, ranging from suborbital to orbital.
COSMoS Program
The goal of the COSMoS (CSTART’s Open Source Modular Satellite) program is the design and construction of a family of miniature satellites, based on the CubeSat specification. These satellites will be used to perform scientific activities in Low Earth Orbit.
Future programs
Possible future programs for CSTART are:
- Using the results of the COSMoS program to perform more specific scientific programs in Earth orbit.
- Combining the results of the Chimera and COSMoS programs to construct simple lunar/interplanetary probes (cf early Luna probes).
- Undertaking robotic exploration of the moon.
Whereas the foundational programs have largely been decided by the earliest and most active members of CSTART, the directions that CSTART takes on with future programs will be decided in a more open and democratic matter.

- Mach 30 is reaching out to the rest of the open source spaceflight communityGreetings CSTART, This is J. Simmons, the president and founder of Mach 30, Friend of CSTART and a US non-profit working on open source spaceflight hardware. First of all, congratulations on getting your meetings going again. I know how hard it can be to keep the admin work going. Second, I wanted to share a new community building initiative we are starting […]
- ITAR is a terrible thorn in our side. Let's have a meeting to discuss what we can do about it. Can we make an attempt to reform ITAR?We are only one organization. I think it will take more than us to make sure world wide collaboration on space technology can be done with out ITAR blocking us. With ITAR the way it is now, we have a choice of either being all American and kept out of view from the rest of the world, or we can be all non-american. This is not acceptable. CSTART is a space or […]
- Review of the strategy CSTART meeting that occurred on August 7th, 2011.Another CSTART strategy meeting took place. The main purpose was to review the work that was planned in the prior week. Some progress has been made and we still have things to do. CSTART infrastructure still needs to be put in place. OpenGoo will be a huge asset in collaboration for us. This is waiting on the correct people install it to the server for the r […]
- Review of the strategy CSTART meeting that occurred on July 31, 2011.CSTART is again picking up steam. Things are becoming more organized and some great infrastructure (OpenGoo, collaboration tool) will soon be put into place so that real collaboration can be done online. At the moment, we have planned room for three programs as well as the strategy team. The strategy team is going to temporarily be led by rpulkrabek & Ph […]
- Is anyone fixing cstart.org?I don't know if it's just me, but I can't log into the forums anymore or even create a new account. It also looks like someone managed to get spam links in the footer. Sorry if this has been discussed before, I'm just really excited about helping get CSTART back on its feet :) submitted by wolfz0rz [link] [4 comments] […]
