Hey,

My name is Rang3r1 and I noticed your ambitious plan when I was doing my daily reddit run through. I really thought it to be interesting to say the least, and I noticed that I would be able to offer some things to the project.

I am adept at 3d modeling and design, utilizing 3ds Max, Zbrush, Photoshop, etc. I am also in my first year of college, pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, but would have to wait a year or two before I could really help you guys with the actual engineering aspect.

I would be more than willing to create a 3d model or render, or a draft in AutoCAD.

Welcome aboard. Your skills are pretty much needed.

Btw.. any experience with particle dynamics?

Not really, my expertise is in hard edge modeling, but I am a quick study, so I could always learn. Is it for animations, etc?

Here is some of my work for a better reference:

Do you have any experience with BRL-CAD, perchance?  That would be fantastic.

Nope, for CAD software it is TurboCAD, AutoCAD, and Inventor. I will be learning SolidWorks next year. I am going to download BRL-CAD, like I said before, I am open to learning new things and techniques, software, etc. But if you need something done in a hurry, or want a little more professionalism, I would make my best work with good old 3ds Max with drafting plugins.

I am going to (try) to be a member of the Spacecraft Engineering Workgroup. I'm not sure what type of experience/ degree I might need to join. This kind of thing has always been a hobby of mine, and I am going to try to recruit more engineering students here to the project. I am currently reading up more about the project and current progress.

E:\ I just noticed where you noted that you would really like to keep everything open source. I will try to learn BRL-CAD as soon, and as well as possible.

We don't formally require any kind of experience or degrees to help – just try to back up your ideas with links or calculations.  Hopefully eventually we will have enough eyes on things that any mistakes will be picked up by somebody with appropriate experience or qualifications.

I think the current feeling is that we would really love this to be a 100% open source operation, but we are a little worried that this will leave us only using inferior tools.  If you could give us your honest opinion of how good BRL CAD is relative to standard closed-source alternatives like TurboCad and AutoCAD, after you've had a chance to play with it a bit, that would be a big help.  If a few experienced people tell us it will be good enough that will be a strong motivation to go purely open source.  If you think it's crap and using it would hold us back we will carefully word our social contract to give us the option of using closed source tools in those situations where there are no appropriate open alternatives.

I really look forward to hearing about your BRL CAD experiences.

Welcome! It is great to have someone with your skills and aspirations on the team. I have long been a proponent of producing 3d renders of our ideas so that we can convey our plans to the world in an easy to understand format. So far I don't have any ability to animate which has limited a lot of what we can show.

Let me know if you want the original Google SketchUp files, I believe that they can be exported as 3d models. I would particularly like to see the lunar lander made in 3d because it has an unfolding sequence that would be neat to see.

I could probably import the files into ProE and animate them there. It's a bit late now, but I will have to try tomorrow. What file formats can you export as?

I have pretty extensive experience with Sketchup, albeit an older version. It is the program that I started with. The non-pro version only supports the .dae and .kml formats. The pro version exports .obj and .3ds I am certain. Also, animating in max should be no problem for me. I have made animations before, so I could do that.

BTW: After doing some work with BRL-CAD, I have to say that the learning curve is extremely sharp, and if you don't have a very good understanding of 3d CAD, you will quickly get frustrated and quit. I would definitely not recommend someone who hasn't worked with 3d CAD before to start with the program.

I downloaded SketchUp and exported the CSTART.skp file that was in Dropbox as a .dae and .kmz. I wasn't able to import any of these into either ProE, NX, Inventor, AutoCAD or Ansys. Quickly doing a google search, there are plugins that will allow SketchUp to export to formats which some of these programs could read and I also found one for .obj. Unfortunately I am currently blocked by a proxy, so I am unable to try these plugins. If anyone wants to make the effort, could they try one of these export plugins?

If Rang3r1 is going to make an animation, it would be worth while to see if we can use the .obj export. Otherwise I can see what I can do with the export for ProE.

3ds max has a .dae importer, so I am going to try it out. The biggest concern that I have is that sketchup doesn't output very good models in any format, due to how the models are made. Most of the time they are missing faces and have fudged normals on import. :/

You're right, sketchup doesn't play well with other programs. I used the ProE import plugin I mention before, and the lunar lander didn't even come, only the boosters did, and they came terribly.
