In most open source projects I've been involved in we've found having an IRC channel in which a number of regulars idle in to be very useful as it allows for ideas to be thrashed out quickly and for new people to get easy assistance getting to grips with aspects of the project, as well as allowing project members to get to know each other better in a more informal setting.

Are there any plans to have a CSTART IRC channel (or does one already exist, and if so where)?

We don't currently have one, though I can see the appeal and I think there was a little discussion of starting one when we were first getting started. For a while we used Google Wave a bit like that, but it never caught on in a big way. I would be supportive of starting an IRC channel or going back to wave if people are interested. I bet it could be quite helpful.

We did discuss this in the early days, but most people seemed to prefer the use of Wave, although as it has turned out these days we hardly use Wave at all.

I actually prefer IRC to Wave quite a bit and would be supportive of us setting up an IRC channel.  The Freenode network would be the obviously place to set this up, I think.  Back during the initial discussions I looked into what was involved in getting a channel reserved on Freenode and it didn't seem too hard.  I'm very busy today so I can't look into this again now, but if someone else wanted to, they should feel free.

Main CLLARE workgroups: Mission Planning, Navigation and Guidance. I do maths, physics, C, Python and Java.

Do we have the ability to record the conversation so that everything can be documented?
