I only just learned that Reddit has a CubeSat project, called "Reddi?  Sat.  Go!" (someone from there showed up in our IRC channel tonight and chatted to brmj and detoy for a bit).

I wonder if we want to approach them about merging?  This would be quite straightforward, their entire project could just become a third project for CSTART.  This wouldn't be spreading ourselves thin, like other new project ideas, since it would bring their entire team in with it (170 odd subscribers).  It looks like they've done some really good work so far.

Reading over the IRC chat it looks like the groups have a lot in common.  We're both trying to become non-profits, we're both struggling with ITAR, etc.  Combining forces makes a lot more sense to me than having both of us struggle separately.  Each group would get an extra set of brains to work on the separate projects, and there is some potential for cross-over.  Perhaps we could test a prototype CubeSat's systems by embedding it in an OHKLA prototype?  Perhaps the communications network necessary for CLLARE could grow out of the one necessary for the CubeSat?

It looks like they may already have some sort of "authority" structure in place (i.e. people managing certain parts of the work).  We could probably let them carry that structure across exactly as it is without any problem, as long as it wasn't too authoritarian a structure.  I don't think they have incorporated yet.  If there are people amongst them who are interested in being, e.g., treasurer for their org, I would have no problem with them becoming treasurer for CSTART after we incorporate, if they are willing.  It would very much be an merger of groups rather than a "takeover" by CSTART.

Do other people think this is a good idea, and if so, should we approach them about it?

Main CLLARE workgroups: Mission Planning, Navigation and Guidance. I do maths, physics, C, Python and Java.

I think this is an excellent idea. Is the guy from the IRC is back on today, I would suggest that we run it by him. I'm not sure how I'd want to propose this to his organization otherwise.

Main work groups: Propulsion (booster), Spacecraft Engineering, Computer Systems, Navigation and Guidance (software)

Well, I'm sure you have talked to antinode about this already, but when I spoke with him yesterday, he mentioned that there was a part of the Design Philosophy that conflicted with Reddit Sat Go, specifically the part concerning off-the-shelf parts. Since entire cubesat kits can be purchased, that would conflict with the spirit of keeping the project as open source as possible. He also mentioned that the part of the Social Contract concerning ready-made hardware versus developing our own for purposes of openness was in line with their ideals, so that could be expanded or the Design Philosophy could be revised slightly.

Anyway, I didnt' know if you had already heard that, so I figured I'd throw that out there.

I'd be all right with refining the design pholosophy like that. It's not too big a change, and it's one that I feel is already in line with what we meant, if not what we wrote.
