I ran across this group from Denmark and it looks very similar to what CSTART may be in a few years. This might be a good group to make contact with. Obviously they will not abandon their project to help us, but I'm sure that we can learn a lot from them.

This is a non-profit suborbital space endeavor, based entirely on sponsors and volunteers.
Our mission is to launch a human being into space.

We are working fulltime to develop a series of suborbital space vehicles – designed to pave the way for manned space flight on a micro size spacecraft.

Two rocket vehicles are under development. A small unmanned sounding rocket, named Hybrid Atmospheric Test Vehicle or HATV and a larger booster rocket named Hybrid Exo Atmospheric Transporter or HEAT, designed to carry a micro spacecraft into a suborbital trajectory in space.

The mission has a 100% peacefull purpose and is not in any way involved in carrying explosive, nuclear, biological and chemical payloads.

We intend to share all our techninal information as much as possible, within the laws of EU-export control.

Excellent find! We have got to get in touch with these people. There is so much we could learn from them about hybrid rocket design, for example. I'd also be really interested to see how they got where thay are today.

Wow, this is an incredible find!  These guys have done fantastic work and obviously are working very much in line with our own design philosophy.  I notice they are using scuba components for their environmental control system, which I know we discussed a lot, and also that they are using a pressurised cold gas RCS, which was my earliest preference too.

It's very encouraging that they have so many sponsors, including a few recognisable names like Air Liquide and RS Components.  It makes it feel like we really have a shot at this.

Bidirectional knowledge exchange with these guys (which would initially be quite inbalanced since we have little to offer now) would probably be an excellent thing to strike up, and the sooner the better.

Who wants to be our ambassador?

Not too bad. I think that we can expand it some so that it gets to the point of why we are contacting them (to obtain technical data on hybrid rockets, organization, fundrasing, promotion, ect). An introduction to CLLARE and OHKLA will help them see our vision and build rapport. Based on what their website says, it looks like they are fully willing to provide us with full plans to their hybrid rocket so that may be something worth directly requesting (perhaps a second correspondence).

In addition to what RTM said, there are a few spelling errors that will need to be corrected for the final version and I think the first few sentences are just a little awkward. Perhaps "I am Ms/Mr/Dr. _____ , representing CSTART, the Collaborative Space Travel and Research Team." I'm not quite sure what to do with the sentence after that, but I think it could use a little revising as well.

This is definitely a good start. Thanks.

Fixed spelling errors and changed wording a bit. Still trying to work in stuff about CLLARE and OHKLA. Need to go watch The Office for a bit. Hopefully then the muse will tickle me again.

for the purpose of the exploration of our solar system via manned space missions.

I know this has come up before, but it never really got sorted out then and we absolutely have to get it sorted soon since we are now starting to seriously talk about incorporation, announcing our project to other, similar projects, etc.

Are we really all about manned space missions?  Whether we are or we want to do unmanned stuff too, our mission statement, FAQ, etc. should make it very clear what the case is to prevent confusion.

For my part, I see no reason why we should not do unmanned work as well, but the official ruling will be up to the feelings of the group.

Good point. I didn't catch that.

I think we should leave our mission statement open to unmanned missions.

Perhaps a more direct quote of the mission statement would be appropriate but for now I've fixed it to include unmanned missions. Anything else?

Pretty good. We may want to specifically direct them to the forum, though, since there isn't much to see on the rest of the site.

This brings up a good point, we don't really have a one stop page that defines what exactly we have planned. Maybe we could have a "Missions" link in the navigation bar. This page would be updated frequently to match the current plan.

Speaking of which, do we have a to-do list yet? We need to add ideas like this to some consolidated list so that we don't just let them pass by.

On a similar note, I showed the CSTART home page to a work colleague. In the end of our short discussion, his first impression was something along the lines of "Just briefly looking doesn't make me want to donate".

I'm not an expert in this type of stuff, but somehow we need to get a good first impression so that people will know we are serious.

I suppose we could work on the content and add a good picture or two, but without any flashy videos of rocket tests as of yet, I'm not sure what else we can do. Anyone have any suggestions?

I worked in a non-profit for about a year, and about six months of that was talking to people on the phones. Getting someone to be interested in something like this is about casting the vision. To do this you need to have a very specific goal that you can get excited about too, and you need to have a well-rounded repetoire of trivia regarding the issue. Perhaps we should focus on OHKLA stuff and about how now is the time when space is finally starting to become for everyone. Right now, we are early European explorers. We know there's something on the other side of that great expanse, and that we can get there in one piece, but no one is willing to fund the trip. Perhaps we should start a new forum thread for this?

Oh!  You probably should go right ahead and do that.  Since we will be incorporated in the US and most of our members will probably be American, we should use American spelling consistently.  I do try to do this when I write things that are going to be official or appear on the website, but spelling things properly (:p) is an ingrained habit for me so sometimes I slip up, sorry about that!

I have put a draft "offer of friendship" email template up on the Wiki (for more information about the proposed "friends of CSTART" program, see this thread and this Wiki page).  The template is fairly heavily derived from the drafts that we have been working on in this thread.  For the most part it is generic, but there is a spot near the end where we can slip in a single paragraph that is particular to the group we are offering friendship to.

If there are no objections, I propose that our first contact with Copenhagen Suborbitals take the form of our final version of the template with a specific paragraph slotted in talking about our interest in their hybrid engines.  We can draft this paragraph in this thread.

Unless anybody can think of any good reasons not to, I think we should aim to have an email of this form sent to them in the next day or two.
