C,mm,n (pronounced ‘common’) is an open source community for sustainable personal mobility. I've only just discovered them, but they seem to be an open source solution for anything to do with mobility, but I have seen thus far electric cars. They seem to be very well organized. I am most impressed with their online web platform. Please watch this video. I would love for us to have something similar.

That is really cool and relatively inline with what I had in mind for our web app. Once J Simmons from Mach 30 has posted his contribution to the collaborative hardware design application discussion (which should be soon) we can kind of pool all of these ideas and examples and start discussing what we want. I acknowledge the need to plan things in advance to some extent, but at the same time I would like to see quick progress on the web-app – between Sampo answering questions on aerodynamics, Joe helping us with the avionics and our new mass model giving good advice on propellant needs and materials options, I feel like we will relatively quickly be at the point where we have a lot of work to do assessing different options and making decisions. The sooner we can get some bare bones web app functionality in place the sooner we can actually tackle these challenges!

If they are open source, do you think they would be willing to share how they developed the tool (the code)?

I can't see any reference to the web platform being open source, although it couldn't hurt to ask.
It looked kind of like it was done in Flash to me, in which case I think we might be better off using something else. I could be wrong, though, maybe it just looks that way.

Did a little more digging. First, looks like Luke is right about Flash. The login page says that the web platform (OCP) requires Flash 10 or higher. Second, looks like it is open source (MIT license – sf.net also reports the language as Java on the project page). A quick pass through the Deployment Guide shows that it uses Alfresco under the hood.
Definitely interested to see what features it has and how c,mm,n is using them to develop their projects. I'll have to create an account in the c,mm,n repo and take a look around this weekend. Will post more thoughts then.
