ARCA (Aeronautics and Cosmonautics Romanian Association) is "a non-governmental organization, that promotes innovative aerospace projects located in Valcea County". They are basically a private Romanian space agency. They are not much like CSTART ideologically (they are not open source, as far as I have seen, and obviously have something of a nationalist agenda. However, they are a lot like us in that they are trying to do spaceflight in a simple, cheap, innovative way.

Unlike CSTART, they have a lot of projects going on – see them all here.  Perhaps of particular interest to us is their manned suborbital spacecraft Stabilo: it is precisely the sort of "outside the box" engineering that I would love to see CSTART become known for.

In general, they seem to be big fans of balloon-assisted launches ("rockoons") and of using composite materials everywhere.  Even if they are not an open source group, there is probably a lot we could learn from reading up on their projects.

Main CLLARE workgroups: Mission Planning, Navigation and Guidance. I do maths, physics, C, Python and Java.

These guys look every bit as big and exciting as some of the new US private spaceflight entities that are getting a lot of press. I am actually surprised I had never heard of them.

Their preferred design type is actually kind of neat. If my understanding is correct, the balloon doesn't reduce the launch delta-v requirements by all that much (in the case of the orbital launch vehicle, that is), but it does get everything above the thicker parts of the atmosphere, making it more practical for them to use their high drag but low mass designs based on stacked spheres.

I'll be watching their work with interest.

Main work groups: Propulsion (booster), Spacecraft Engineering, Computer Systems, Navigation and Guidance (software)

This group is doing a lot of very cool stuff. I don't really think that we can expect to integrate with them any more than we could with a group like Masten or Armadillo, but I look forward to seeing how they progress.

Main Workgroups: Propulsion & Spacecraft Engineering
