Today, I got a parcel from Sanjoy Som, at One Flag in Space, containing a printed copy of the CLLARE Project Overview document which he hand-annotated with a lot of helpful comments and suggestions.

I don't have access to a scanner at the moment, and have quite a busy schedule for today, so for now I'm just going to transcribe the broad level comments he left on the front page.  I will try to publish more detailed comments soon:

Interesting concept!

  • Have there been trade studies to justify particular design choices? (e.g. power)
  • Is OTRAG booster part of CLLARE?
  • Astronaut positioning in LL & CM is cause for concern.
  • Lack of solar panels is intruiging
  • Would increase value if there was a cargo only option
  • delta v very minimalistic.  There are plane changes to deal with which will add to the delta v budget
  • Love the "open-air" LL
  • At this stage of the document you could combine most of chapter 2 w/ chapter 4
  • A ummary project overview could go as section 1.5
  • Collaboration w/ openluna in EVA suit obvious.
  • Power budget needs expansion
  • Needs a section for GNC & thermal
  • I would not stray from spherical tanks –> adds redundancy & safety

For the most part Sanjoy's comments seem fairly positive, which is great.  He does draw attention to some issues that we certainly need to consider.

Again, I will expand on the above in future.

Main CLLARE workgroups: Mission Planning, Navigation and Guidance. I do maths, physics, C, Python and Java.

It is interesting to hear the opinion of an outsider. Granted, much of the information is currently outdated, but I think this gives us some points to think about.
