Our CSTART logo is really awesome and it was a great stroke of luck to have a good designer amongst the earliest members.
Maybe now we also want a logo specifically for the CLLARE project? Do people think this is a good idea, and if so does anybody have any ideas? Rizwan, do you feel like working your magic again?

Personally I feel we shouldn't have a logo for each and everything. It would just be an utter mess of branding.
My proposal would be something like keeping the CSTART logo and adding the text CLLARE below it. Something like what I have done for the wiki

I think that closer to the actual mission we will probably come up with some sort of mission patch.
Maybe we could open up a design contest. There are thousands of willing graphic designers out there and it would help to spread word about the project. Not to mention that some of them might stick around to help us with promotional work.

"We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not only because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too." I must say I agree with Rocket. But earlier today I whipped up this rather ugly placeholder. All apologies to Zvan for the awful butchering of his lovely logo.

I actually think that is a great idea, gerbal. It suggests a consistent scheme where for any mission we can make a logo / mission patch / whatever by centering an image of the body involved (moon, Mars, whatever) over the CSTART logo and then just writing the particular project name (e.g. "CLLARE") horizontally across the middle, like this:

This keeps things simple from a branding perspective (the coloured ring design of the main CSTART logo is prominent and recognisable in all of them) but still gives us a bit of variety.

The more I look at it, the less I like it. Too many artifacts and errors created by poor adaptation from the original. but I got to see the ugly of the creation of it. It will work for now until Zvan shows up and does one proper.
Does anyone have the original of the logo? Preferably a photoshop file or vector image? That would be tremendously helpful over the long run to be able to adapt and edit from the source rather than from later, smaller, versions.

Iactually like it. I'm sure that getting hold of the original file will help to smooth out some of the rough edges.
Is having a design contest a good or bad idea? My hope is that it would help recruit a few graphic designers so that we won't have to worry about doing this stuff ourselves in the future.

A design contest isn't a bad idea, but at the moment it is a bit premature. I would wait until the project has generated some small achievements and mild notoriety. I would say the day after we get a story about us to the front page of slashdot is about the level of notoriety needed to avoid being blown off.
Either that or we have an awesome prize for the contest.
Thinking more on what Rizwan said, he may be right. Creating a distinct logo for every aspect of the project will be hell on maintaining uniform branding. I trust his judgement on this.

The concept of adding a Moon or Mars depending on the project is nice, but I think it might be an overkill.
I firmly believe in the concept of KISS: Keep it simple, stupid. Let me know your views.
As for the design contest, I am not in favour of Spec Work
I will make a new page tonight with all the PR material and vector files.

If we were to go with that logo design we would have to simplify the image of the moon to match the logo. It might be best to draw our own moon, not sure if the image if original or taken off the net.
