If anyone has been following the rss feed for the wiki, you will know that there has been an incredable amount of spam recently. I'm not a wiki guru. Does anyone know how to delete pages?

Yeah, I have noticed the same from the RSS feed. I don't think I have administrator privileges, but I'll go see if I can lock it down and delete the offending accounts.

If you log in to the wiki and click on "random page" on the left menu there is a good chance it will be a spam article. You can then click on delete at the top of the page and mark it as vandalism. I guess we can "collaborate" and take them down as a group.

Okay, I think I got rid of most of the spam. I'm not quite sure how to lock down user registration though.

It's now worse than ever. Fancy having another go at clearing it?

As an very quick and very minor thing to avoid a repeat of the very worst that has happened, I've now locked the main page so that only admin accounts can edit it (really, this should have been done a long time ago!).
This coming weekend I will make time to (i) clean up anything else which is still left by that time (ii) try my best to lock the Wiki down, using the resources J kindly provided. While there I'll also try to update the main page to not be quite so embarassingly out of date (e.g. replace the CLLARE and OHKLA links with Cloudlab, Chimera and COSMoS links).

Luke, I'll try to get started on the wiki cleaning. I've been monitoring it via RSS and essentially gave up because I don't know how to lock down registrations. I'll get started now.

The easiest way I have found to delete pages is to go to the "new pages" page, middle click on about 10 or 15 links so they open in new tabs, and then click on delete for each one, then click on the delete button again, then close the tabs. This way you don't have to wait as each page loads.

Thanks very much for this.

I think the best thing to try first to limit the spam would be to require filling out a CAPTCHA in order to register an account. This should stop bots signing up and hence should stop the spam edits – but it won't inconvenience legitimate users after account creation. Unfortunately, to do this requires installing an extension, and that requires access to the filesystem that Mediawiki is installed on. Only Rizwan has this level of access. Rizwan, are you able to get on this any time soon? The second link that J provided above mentions some extensions which would allow us to do this.

I have put indefinite blocks on all of the user accounts which were involved in the recent spam posts which RTTM kindly deleted. This probably won't do much, since until Rizwan gets CAPTCHAs up, the bots can just create new accounts, but it's better than nothing.
I've also changed the front page to reflect the new program structure. The individual programs do not have pages yet, but I will put at least stubs up today. I may also try to make some changes to the actual cstart.org site, although I don't think I can go as far as getting a "Programs" link in the navbar, it's up to Rizwan to do that.

Great work. I am monitoring the Wiki via RSS and I will attempt to stay on top of this now by deleteing all posts and blocking new user accouts.

Thanks, Rocket, I appreciate that.
I've now created stub Wiki pages for all 3 of our named programs (which you can see clear links to on the main wiki page), and there are cstart.org pages (CloudLab, Chimera, COSMoS) which link to those Wiki pages and a cstart.org page (programs) with links to all of the individual cstart.org program pages. The only really missing ingredient now (aside from more content on those pages) is a clear link to that programs page from the homepage/navbar.

Thanks a lot for doing all of this. It's really appreciated. I have the next two weeks off from work, so I should be able to work a bit on OHKLA. I hope to get quite a bit more designed, and would then like to update the wiki. It would be great if we can get the wiki and website back in order. This would then let others know that we are, in fact, serious.

Any way that we can block all registrations? It is really getting kind of tiring having to delete pages and users every day.

The ConfirmEdit extension looks good.
