Couldn't agree more with you, brmj.
My vision is basically:
- Technical decisions are made by interested people on the forums / wiki. Some of these people may be non-board members of the formal CSTART org, some of them may not be, doesn't matter.
- There is a process whereby people can say to the board "we'd like to make this design official and get money to contract its construction". The actual process would need some fleshing out.
- The board calls a meeting whereat anybody who is a member of the formal CSTART org can vote to approve or deny this request.
- If the request is approved only then is the treasurer allowed to pay contractors, etc.
This means the board keeps out of day to day design work and only actually blesses something as official and financable if the majority of our non-board members agree with it.
I agree with this. Apart from that we shouldn't somehow give too much power in the hands of the board, right now its the only problem with this. Because in the end it is the board who is still deciding on yes or no.
Lets not forget that power and money corrupts people.
We should have some clause in the contract, that if needed the community can decide and vote on removing an officer.
We also need to discuss what are the contractual agreements of the officer? It is obvious the officer will be a volunteer and among the early members. What is expected from them? Since this is volunteer position we can't expect them to devote their entire time to this project. And I am sure the officers will be more busy as the project progress.
PS: Hopefully I wont be hit by a bus soon. But incase (gulp!) something like that happens, all the relevant passwords are stored in a text file which my brother has knowledge of. So he will be handing it over to a person chosen by the community. And it is unlikely both of us will be hit by a bus.
