I just got done rewatching this episode of Mythbusters so that I could get some inspiration and ideas about building a hybrid rocket. Their design used paraffin wax and liquid Nitrous Oxide. They added powdered carbon to the wax to act as a "stabilizer". We'll need to look into this to see what inherent instabilities there are in paraffin combustion without it.

You can watch this episode on Amazon for $1.99

Alternatively you can find it through torrents if you are into that (just download MB.3x23.Confederate.Rocket.PDTV-FQM.avi).

Here is a video of what I had in mind for a first generation motor. Note the sparkler ignition system. It looks like these guys had some issues though.

Same guys, more experience.

I sent a message to the owner of that channel and invited him to join our forum. His experience would really help push us forward.

Perhaps this is premature as I don't know about this coming year but for the past two or three years several of the Mythbusters interns have been coming to I-CON [http://iconsf.org], a local convention I attend. Perhaps I could have a nifty CSTART pamphlet or business card to slip them before March rolls around?

Excellent idea! If I manage to make it to Penguicon or Confusion this year, I can do that too. Penguicon would be great for this; it is a combination SF and Free and Open Source Software convention, and it attracts legions of all types of geeks. Alsom there's a guy I know who attends ConFusion who has written books about rocketry and is a huge model rocket enthusiest. He might be a good guy to get in touch with.

Then, of course, there's a guy I know who attends ConFusion who has written books about rocketry and is a huge model rocket enthusiest. He might be a good guy to get in touch with.

It certainly sounds like it!  Maybe we should do this soon, if you know him it is probably not so important to wait until we look more organised since presumably he knows you are not crazy and you would be able to quickly answer questions that the website may leave open.  He would probably be able to give us a good idea of specific issues and problems we are likely to face during OHKLA.

Main CLLARE workgroups: Mission Planning, Navigation and Guidance. I do maths, physics, C, Python and Java.

I don't know him particularly well. He's an aquaintence from the filk circles at various conventions. I suspect he knows I'm not crazy, though, so I guess I could email him or something.
