I was just playing around a little with Redmine and Project Open. Here's my initial impressions.

Redmine reminded me of SourceForge and similar just a bit. I like the simplicity of the interface. However, I wish it at least had some way to do an overall status for a project, for example, which it doesn't seem to be able to do. I got the distinct vibe that this is targeted primarilly at open source software projects and perhaps small software startups.

Project Open looks quite a bit more substantial than I think we need, but then again this sort of thing might be more helpful for CLLARE, especially as a way to keap us organized without bringing in too much "hyper-management" BS. It looks very powerful. The interface would presumably be less confusing if it was in a language I could read. If Redmine is designed for small, loosely organized software projects, then this is targeted at larger, more hyerarchal and corporate sorts of efforts. I'm not sure which is closer to our needs on that front, since the philosophy Redmine is aimed at is more like us, but Project Open's style is probably more in line with the sort of management we may need for CLLARE.

On the whole, I think I'd have to come out in favor of Project Open for the long term, but I'd need to paly around with them a bit more to be sure, and I'd like to see Project Open with an english interface.

I just found OSEE (Open System Engineering Environment). It is described as providing "all-in-one solution to configuration management, requirements management, testing, validation, and project management." It looks very promising.

That looks interesting. I may have to install it and play around with it when I have some time.

What would be awesome as well would be something like individual blogs for all of the team members, where everyone can post status updates on what he/she is doing currently so that everyone can see what everyone else is doing. Can any system provide that?

Twitter comes to mind, but it doesn't provide real blog support.

Another solution for that would be http://elgg.org/

Could this be a useful tool for us?

I am sure that any advanced orginization scheme can't hurt at all.

I am almost beginning to wonder if we should start an open source software project to create this Project Management system. This is a project that could utilize the large pool of programmers who are already members and those on reddit. The biggest problem would be finding people with graduate level knowledge of project management that could guide the development of the software.

Maybe this isn't quite what you're looking for, ticket systems like the ones used for tech support are pretty neatly organized and just generally appeal to me personally, having worked tech support for 4 years.

Here's an open source example: http://otrs.org/

The main flaw that stands out is that it doesn't have any way of sharing files that I can see, but in terms of keeping an eye on specific projects and looking for updates, I like the format.

Anyway, it may be way off track but I thought I'd mention it in case you think there may be a use for it.

On second thought I think I retract my comment above about creating our own project management system. Applying our design philosophy to this we should definitely be using an off the shelf system so that we don't have to reinvent the wheel.

At the moment we have been trying to make use of the Issue tracking system that comes with Google code – you can check it out here.  Is this the kind of thing you are thinking of?

It hasn't exactly worked fantastically yet, but I think this is mostly because (i) not everyone knows about it / can access it (ii) we haven't made much of an effort to push for systematic use of it.  I don't think we can conclude yet that it fundamentally won't work for us.  Maybe we should try harder on this front.

Oh, that's sort of exactly that I was thinking. What's the access issue?
