Do we want a motto for CSTART?  This might be good for building a reputation / sense of unity and purpose.

Apparently NASA's motto is "For the Benefit of All".  Maybe we could come up with something to emphasise the collaborative nature of or team?

If people come up with a few good suggestions, the WordPress software includes an option for holding polls.  We could set a poll going once we have a decent number of ideas and set a deadline, choosing whichever motto is most popular by that time.

Any ideas?

I want to add to the original motto I had.

"Open collaboration around the world from those determined to leave it."

My only cause for hesitation on this motto is that it perhaps makes us sound like we are focused on space colonisation, or perhaps just manned space exploration.  I have no problem with either of those things, I just wonder whether or not we don't want CSTART to have a wider scope – e.g. we might want to send unmanned probes to some of the interesting moons of Jupiter or Saturn, which doesn't really involve determination to leave Earth.

But by doing these things doesn't that lead up to the colonization of other worlds? so the small work we do now, will have large implications later

The motto should not be overly long and should avoid pronouns.

I think Latin makes everything sound cleverer, and in that spirit I propose:

Libertas et scientia ad astrum.

or

Vegrandis officina hominum amoveo universum

"Collaboration around the world from those who are determined to leave it." + "Lets, explore it!"

Liking all the suggestions so far! What about "Together, we explore"? This leaves unmanned exploration open, and focuses upon collaboration around the world, combining the best of both, whilst keeping a serious angle. Feedback?

Edit:

Libertas et scientia ad astrum.

or

Vegrandis officina hominum amoveo universum

Without using a translator, have little clue what that means, but can guess xD Nice idea, but to be a truly accessible, modern project, shouldn't we be looking to the future, not the past?

I like this very much. "Together, we explore"

It is fun to say and sounds collaborative and motivating.

I suppose a translation would be particularily helpful. I know no latin, so the grammar and word choice may be hilariously incorrect.

Libertas et scientia ad astrum. – Freedom and knowledge to the stars

Vegrandis officina hominum amoveo universum – Small works of man shift the universe

Latin reminds too much of old, stuffy institutions. How about something easily translatable into several languages, that still has power? I like the phrase 'Freedom and knowledge to the stars', gerbal.

So, what is the official motto? Perhaps this would be a good way to test out the development of how to implement a voting application.

We never did decide on one, it seems.

If we wanted to sort this out soonish, there is a poll facility buit into Word Press that either Rizwan or myself could use to set up a poll.  The big issue would be choosing the candidate mottos to vote from.  There are a few here but we may want more.

Maybe we could put something on /r/tothemoon to gather ideas?  I get the impression that there are lurkers there who may want to make suggestions who are not active on these forums.

I'd like to propose another candidate: "Space exploration, by anyone, for everyone", or some variation along those lines.

Also, Rocket used the phrase "Upward bound" in one of his promotional renders which I thought had a nice ring to it (although there's nothing in it to suggest collaborativeness – "Upward bound, together?".

If we did decide to run a vote on this soonish using Reddit to gather ideas and a WP poll to count the votes, it would be a good thing to put on our blog/twitter/facebook to increase traffic on those channels.

I definitely like the two you just proposed.

I would agree that posting something to /r/tothemoon is a good idea.

Cool stuff.

Let's hold off on it just for now, though.  I'd like to make this a fairly coordinated event (to get some practice with our infrastructure if nothing else).  We should make a blog post announcing a Motto Competition and lay down some basic ground rules and explanations.  The blog entry will link to the /r/tothemoon submission for ideas, and the /r/tothemoon submission will point to the blog.  We should have tweets and FB updates shortly after this goes up.

Only Rizwan has access to Twitter at the moment, as far as I know, so we'll have to coordinate this with him.

Also, it would probably be good if the very first post to our blog was a bit more of a "Welcome to the CSTART blog" kind of thing than the motto competition.  I will write something along these lines later today for people to look over quickly and then post it (EDIT: See this thread for a proposed first entry).  Hopefully we can get the motto thing up and running a day or two after that.

Now might be a good time to start discussing rules for the competition, if we want any.  A maximum number of words might be a good rule.

The more I think about it, the less I think a formal set of rules is necessary.  We can just let upvoting and downvoting on /r/tothemoon take care of things, right?

A 12 word limit might be the only restriction to impose.  This is long enough to encompass all suggestions so far.

How does this sound for a general form?

  1. Announcement – blog post, tweet and FB update announcing motto competition.  Blog post explains the idea, word limit and form of the competition.  Thread is created in /r/tothemoon for ideas.  Anyone can submit as many ideas as they like, people can upvote and downvote as they see fit.
  2. Selection of candidates (one week later) – blog post, tweet and FB update explaining progress so far.  5 most upvoted options from /r/tothemoon thread are entered as options into a WordPress poll on the blog.
  3. Selection of motto (one week later) – blog post, tweet and FB update explaining progress so far.  Most voted for option from the WordPress poll is selected as our motto.

What do people think not only of this general form, but of the numbers?  Is the top 5 a good number to select, or should we take more or less?  Is one week between the stages a good time?  Too long or too short?  The longer we leave the first phase open, the longer people have to think of ideas, which is good, but at the same time the longer people have to arrange spam voting and the like.

Draft blog announcement:

CSTART needs a motto and in the spirit of our collaborative nature we are going to let the community decide.  Thus, CSTART announces its Motto Selection Competition, which opens today!  This is your chance to leave a mark on the face of CSTART which could last for decades!

The competition will be conducted using a combination of our /r/tothemoon subreddit and a poll on this blog.  There are two phases of the competition:

The candidate selection phase, which begins now and lasts until [TIMEDATE]: During this phase, anybody and everybody can suggest a motto by making a post to this thread on our subreddit.  The only restriction is that your motto must be 12 words or less.  In addition to suggesting mottos, it is important that you upvote the mottos you like (and downvote the trolls!).  This will be important for…

The motto selection phase, which will begin on [TIMEDATE] and last until [TIMEDATE]: During this phase, the [CANDIDATECOUNT] most upvoted submissions to the Reddit thread will be made the choices for a poll entry in this blog.  The entry which receives the most votes before the closing date will be adopted as the official CSTART motto!

So what are you waiting for?  Post your motto ideas to the Reddit thread now!
