Hi everyone,

Following up on some very old discussions about how we'd like to see the website improved, I've started making a few very rough demo pages related to the projects.

This page is a very rough demo of what I think cstart.org/projects should look like – a relatively brief listing of all the projects with links to individual pages.  For this demo I've used the 4 starting projects that I proposed a long time ago and which nobody convincingly argued against.  I've given them silly non-descript names for now – if we decide to tidy this page up and actually make it /projects we should choose names.

I've made very rough demo pages for "Project Rocket" and "Project Mannedflight" just to give a taste for how those pages should feel – a quick overview of the project, the phase structure showing where we plan to go, and then links to Wiki pages etc. for more detail.  The URLs for these sorts of pages would eventually be something like cstart.org/projects/rocket, etc.

If people like this general idea let me know and I'll do more work on getting both the /projects page and the individual project pages looking nicer and more complete and then we can set their URLs accordingly and add a link to the nav bar.

It looks like a pretty decent way to have a "one stop" place for newcomers to see what we are working on at any given time. I don't think we should include too many details because those are always bound to change.

I agree with this.  The project pages should just state the basics, like a brief overview of the project and its phase structure, and then the links at the bottom should lead to more dynamic places where cutting-edge stuff can be found: wiki pages, pages inside the ODE application, to .pdf reports, etc.

I have made some changes to all of these pages – the project listing page and the individual project pages for Project Balloon, Project Rocket, Project CubeSat and Project MannedFlight.  Each project now has what I think is a fairly comprehensive description of its purpose and a fairly sensible Phase Structure (with the exception of CubeSat, whose Phase Structure should be considered quite tentative – I haven't read or thought much about this yet).  There is also some more text on the project listing page explaining the nature of these 4 projets as "foundational projects" and indicating that more ambitious future projects (such as CLLARE) will eventually happen using the building blocks from these projects, and that these future directions will be chosen by the community.

I am very keen to collect feedback from everyone on every aspect of these pages.

If people are generally feeling that this project structure is a good idea, these pages are a good idea and the information on them is starting to look good enough to make public then we should probably start thinking about naming these projects (which can be done using Reddit and polls, as we did for the motto), designing logos/icons for each (if we agree that is a good idea) and opening these pages up to the public.

What do people think about this being part of a bigger strategy for CSTART where we basically sketch out our immediate future in rough detail (using these pages) and then put a hold on actual engineering to focus on cooperating with Mach 30 on the Open Design Engine (or whatever we want to call it platform), and then "activating" engineering on these projects as the ODE software becomes available?  Since Project Balloon is relatively simple, we could activate it almost as soon as we have a basic ODE beta functioning.  This would provide useful testing of the Beta and help iron out obvious bugs.  Once our confidence in ODE has grown we can then activate Project Rocket (which will be something of a reactivation, since we have so far done good work on OHKLA (which constitutes Phase 1 of Project Rocket), and then the other projects, etc.  This approach would lead to some "downtime" for contributors who could not assist with the design and programming of ODE.  I am not opposed to us coming up with some way to allow these people to contribute in the interim – perhaps by writing tech reports etc., which we could develop a document database to help manage.

Some specific comments for Rizwan:

  1. Currently the 4 separate projects on the project listing page correspond to individual cells in a table.  I know that using tables for layout is a major no-no in modern web design, but my CSS isn't particularly strong and I was in a hurry to get this demo page up so we could start doing good work on this front.  If you are concerned about this, please feel free to redo the page using divs and stylesheets at any time, once you do so I'll endeavour to avoid breaking it with revisions.
  2. Are you interested in doing logos/icons for the projects?  I figure this will brighten the page up a bit.  We can reuse the logos on reports, etc.  If so I have some more thoughts on what would work well here, but this is a low-priority issue so there's no rush.

Good work with getting this started, as a project landing page is definitely needed. I would consider changing a few of the terms being used though. Particularly, these broad "projects" may be better classified as multiple projects contained within "programs". The Apollo Program for example entailed of multiple projects and missions. It could certainly work the way you've done it but it's something to consider. Each "phase" would also have its own Project Lifecycle "phases" which could get confusing.

The "Mannedflight Program" could be made up of several modular "projects" that can be worked on individually in the "ODE", including the re-entry module, orbital module, lunar landing module, etc. Program phases similar to how you've lined them out would still be required of course, but perhaps these could be called "stages" to diferentiate from Project Lifecycle "phases" that each project would have.

What I've pictured as far as content goes is pretty much like what you've done, but with logos and design branding for each project like you suggested. A good example of what I'm picturing is the Kickstarter site. The project search is the /projects landing page where the Categories on the left could be the "Programs". Indivual projects would then have their own branded project pages providing a project overview with text, photos, and video. This is what I had in mind for the blue tab labled "CLLARE" is the mockup I made.

Hi antinode!  Long time no see, it's great to hear from you again.  I'm glad you like the way the project pages are starting to look.  Since nobody has objected for quiet a while I suppose we should consider kicking this up a gear and start making plans for a name and logo competition on /r/tothemoon.

I'm more than happy to consider a project->program and phase->stage renaming, that actually sounds more sensible to me, as well, I think.

What do you think about the current page for the CubeSat program?  I still haven't done a huge amount of CubeSat research, I don't know how well my proposed phase structure makes sense at the moment.  In particular I don't know realistically how many U units would be needed to achieve certain things.  From memory at the moment I have a whole U unit dedicated to orientation control, I don't know how realistic that is.  Since you were always the person most interested in the CubeSat program I'm extremely happy to hear ideas from you on a better stage structure etc.

The Kickstart project page looks great, largely the kind of thing I had in mind.

Luke, et al,

Just wanted to say that I think this is a good idea and is really shaping up.  Greg and I just had a conversation along similar lines for the Mach 30 website (basically coming to the conclusion that there needs to be more top level summary info about our current work that is easy to find).  I'll be sure to forward these pages to the rest of the Mach 30 board to take a look at to get the conversation going over here.

Luke, you might also want to list the software projects on the project page.  I am thinking about both the analysis codes I saw forum posts about (there is a reentry one I can't find off hand and USOFS), and ODE (which Mach 30 will be listing on our project page when we get that going on the site).  This would give software developers a place to plug into CSTART and help promote those projects that need those skills.

Speaking of ODE, I need to go upload some screenshots Greg and I worked on to act as mock ups to discuss and post that to the ODE discussion…

Hi J,

Glad you think this is coming along well.  The idea of adding the software projects to that page is an excellent one which should have been obvious!  Thanks for catching that, I'll update it soon.

As you may have noticed, I made a blog post a few days ago explaining the planned change to the 4 new foundational projects, and the fact that we will be working on the ODE tool to facilitate these projects.  I'd like to make the promised second post explaining the nature of the projects soon, so as to facilitate name voting etc. so that we can make the project landing pages publically visible.  So if anybody has anything they really want to say about the details of the projects, please say it soon!

I've been thinking more about the program/project thing.  I don't know how universal this is, but to me, "program" has connotations of a long-term endeavour, with lots of individual steps, with an uncertain total duration.  The "X Program" sounds like it should have "X 1", "X 2", etc, for as long as it takes us to complete the program's goals.  In contrast "project" sounds to me like more of a one-off, clearly defined effort without subdivisons.  Do other people have this intuitive understanding?  If so, how do we think this applies to our projects/programs/whatever.

On the one hand, the currently proposed 4 projects/programs do have a stage structure, which is inline with the pluralistic interpretation of "program".  On the other hand, I envision them as being efforts to produce the technology to enable other projects/programs which will be even more program like.  E.g. once we have a proven generic CubeSat infrastructure, we might decide to use it to investigate some specific scientific phenomenon, and that could be a long term endeavour that we don't immediately know the duration of – we might have to keep laucnhing ever more advanecd satellites as part of that Program until we finally have all the data we need for our purposes.  Compared to something like, something like "Project Rocket" seems fairly limited in scope.

Perhaps I'm making too big a deal out of this.  What do other people think?

I notice that NASA don't seem particularly consistent in their use of these words.  This page seems to use some definitions whereby "Project Apollo" was a "Program", which I consider somewhat confusing.

WikiAnswers has the following to say on the matter:

Programs are made up of projects. Projects also have start and end
dates and are specific to deliverables, whereas programs do NOT have a
specific end date as they are created to meet a strategic or tactical
aim. e.g Program might have a main objective to improve customer
service and there will be more than one project created to meet that
aim such as project to improve delivery times, project to shorten wait
on phones, project to create and ringback and follow-up. New projects
are added (and removed) depending on changes in strategy, budget,
resources and are prioritised accordingly.

I guess with this definition, something like "Project Rocket" would be a Program, and the different Stages within it would be Projects?

That's what I was thinking. Each individual "module" be its own "project". Programs are made up of multiple projects which are then used

concurrently to carry out the "missions" that the "stages" describe. Project Mannedflight would be made up of at least the RM and OM as it's currently stated, both which would be best developed as individual projects in the ODE. As the Wikipedia definition states, new projects could be added that are in the category of Manned Flight — such as a lunar lander, or a space suit.
