I think that we are in desperate need of another big IRC meeting, like the one we had before SpaceUp, to get a lot of important work done.  Very much has been suggested lately with regards to getting ourselves better organised, and it is time to implement some of it!  Also, we really need to get our asses into gear on incorporation, and to a lesser extent, merchandising.  There are also still many loose ends with regards to the Engineering Process and Project Lifestyle/Management systems.  Basically, we havea  lot of work to do, and having semi-regular bit IRC workathons is the best way to get that stuff done, and fast.

It's probably a good idea to use the WhenIsGood system to plan this next meeting, since it worked well last time.  Unfortunately, once again, I do not know the account details for our WhenIsGood account, so whomever operates that account will have to set up another meeting on it.  Can this person please do so ASAP and post the link here?  Sometime on the weekend would probably be best so we can get as many people involved as possible.

Main CLLARE workgroups: Mission Planning, Navigation and Guidance. I do maths, physics, C, Python and Java.

A partial agenda for this IRC meet up:

  • Incorporation stuff: Do we still want to incorporate in the US, or go elsewhere after the advice we received at SpaceUp?  Brmj, if you will be at this meeting, it might be good if you could prepare a quick summary statement of this advice.  If we still want to go in the US and in particular in NY, then the path ahead is very clearly laid out in the old 501(c)(3) thread, we need to get people to actually agree to do specific tasks on that list so we can finally move ahead with this.
  • Merchandise stuff: It looks like Zazzle.com will pay us each month through PayPal, which is good.  We should double check that this is the case and check anything else we want to to make sure Zazzle.com is a good enough service for us.  If it is, then we should set up a store there.  This should not take long and could probably be done during the meeting.
  • Elgg installation.  It looks like Elgg is the perfect solution to a wide range of problems that have come up lately, including centralised file hosting (at last!), giving individual members blogs/microblogs to discuss their work, etc.  We should see if we can get an Elgg installation set up on cstart.org to play around with.  I don't know how much of a pain to install this is, if it could be done during the meeting, then excellent, if not, that's understandable.
  • There is much work to be done on the various formal processes.  Perhaps the biggest priority now that there are two CLLARE plans going on is to formalise the proposal selection process.  Advertising that process well enough on Reddit etc. might be a good way to bring in more people, too, with more innovative ideas, which would be good.

Lots more stuff to work on here!  There should be something for literally everyone to work on.  Let's try to make March/April a really productive period!

I'd also like to bring, again, attention to:

  • Requirements Management Systems — while not pressing right now, it definitely will be a road block when it's needed and not there.

Yes, very true.  Perhaps during the meeting we can once again pick up the task of surveying open source RMS software and seeing which one will best suit our needs.  Perhaps we could even install 2 or 3 of them to have a live play around with.

Something else to think about: IRC logging options.  Unfortunately we cannot run a logging bot on cstart.org, but some people in the community will be able to run such bots.  How can we best integrate external logging with the cstart.org site?  Is there perhaps a nice searchable log web application which will let a logging bot upload logs to it via HTTP using a username and password?  This would then look pretty seamless.  We can look into our options during the meeting, if anybody wants to research different options before the meeting and give us a brief report then to safe time, that would be fantastic.

I could probably run some kind of IRC logging bot as I have a PC that essentially sits idle most of the time (powered up and online).

Another topic to address at the next meeting is Marketing and Exposure.  While Rizwan and others have done great work creating the brand/website for the project, I believe there is much to be done to increase awareness.  Plain and simple: we need more contributions — in the form of both technical knolwledge and financial support.  The only way this will happen is if we step up our game and SHOW people what we're about.  A lot of people are going to be overwhelmed by the walls of text contained on the forums/Wiki, which may be a deterrent to some.

I'd like to start planning some projects to help promote the organization, as well as find various creative types to collaborate with.  Having someone to help translate the technical data into laymen's terms, create outlines, as well as people to provide feedback on these projects will help ensure a clear and unified vision.  As I have said before, I'm not a physics/engineering guy, and I think we should broaden our audience to include ANYONE interested in space exploration.  It is likely that a lot of donations will come from people without much to contribute to our technical design process.

We need to get more people excited about CSTART! sf laugh

I am greatly in favor of this happening. That's quite the important agenda.

tnylund, you raise a good point. I'm not sure what we can do to generate excitement at this early stage, but we should do our best to think of something. I suppose we could tell Buzz Aldrin about our project and hope he supports it. He's apearently been advocating all sorts of bold manned space exploration plans recently, and with his name (and 830,000+ twitter followers) behind us, I expect we would see a bit more interest. Just a thought, and probably a bad one.

Whenever an idea like this gets raised, I get very nervous.  Naturally I want as many people as possible to know about, believe in and support CSTART, but I am always paranoid that our first "big exposure" will come too early – when we have too few people and too hard technical details to impress anybody.  You only get once chance to make a first impression.  If our first impression in the eyes of a huge proportion of the people who could help us most (space nuts, the kind of people likely to follow Buzz on Twitter) is a poor one, we will really, really shoot ourselves in the foot.

Of course, to some extent, this is out of our control.  Some well-meaning supporter could Slashdot us tomorrow, and we'd probably get the same reception as Open Luna.

While I understand that we may not want to make a huge splash right now due to the fact that the organization is still in its infancy, there will come a time where we will be facing numerous skeptics and negative reviews.

I think the key is to maintain our focus by staying positive, motivated and believing that what we've proposed can and will be achieved.  There will always be pessimists who will claim the project is destined for failure, but we should use them to our advantage.  I can't speak for everyone else, but whenever someone tells me I can't do something, my inclination is to prove them wrong.  With that said, being nervous is natural; what we've set out to accomplish here is quite an undertaking and will no doubt be negatively received by some with a less-than-optomistic reviews.

Everyone has to start somewhere, and I think we've laid out a solid foundation with a great core team as the backbone of the project.  People are here because they want to be — because they have a dream and want to see it become a reality in their lifetime.  As long as we continue to support each other and keep our eyes on the prize, nothing can stop us!

sf cool

Cue epic victory music.

Tinylund, you have a fantastic attitude, it's great to see. sf laugh

Another important agenda issue we really need to dedicate some time to:  The future of OHKLA, particular with regards to our cooperation with PSAS.  Do we want to make it a fully combined project?  If so, what are the logistics of this (regarding legal ownership of things, who holds copyright, etc, etc).  Do we want to expand the scope of OHKLA?  The current focus is on hybrid propulsion at the cost of all else: super simple avionics, no control, etc.  The motivations for this were (i) we want to build really big hybrid rockets (ii) we didn't have the experience or manpower to focus on other things.  Now we no longer want to build really big hybrid rockets, and the PSA people do have a lot of experience with more sophisticated avionics, and have a special focus on complicated control.  In light of these things, do we want to set the bar for OHKLA a little higher?

If we want to rework OHKLA into something that could launch small educational and scientific suborbital payloads, that could lead to a good, early source of income.

Another thing to discuss:  The Press Kits that each project is now meant to have as part of its Core Documents.  We should start on these soon.  I imagine Rizwan might be keen to help with this, but so too might be some of our newer members who are into graphics.
